Pic. 1: The "Datassette"
History - Links
Description
The socalled 'Datassette' is the cheapest mass storage device for
nearly all Commodore machines (PET2001, VIC-20, C64, C128).
And the slowest. Really slow.
The 1531 is actually the same as the usual 1530 except that it
has a Mini-DIN connector instead of the PCB edge connector, since it
was designed for the C-16. By replacing the connector with the PCB
edge type, you can make the 1531 work with a C-64 (and the rest of
the machines mentioned above).
Note: ONLY use Ferro-oxyde tapes!
1. The 1530
The Datassette was introduced with the PET series (where it was built
into the PET's case) and except for the look, never changed
dramatically.
2. The 1531
The Commodore 264 series (C16 / C116 / Plus/4) have different connectors
for the Datassette. For these machines, Commodore made the 1531, which is
a standard 1530 in a black (or charcoal gray) case and equipped with the
appropriate connector. The PCB seems to differ from the 1530's, at least
with the drives I have.
