Phasing Out Windows 2000

A number of departments still have machines running Windows 2000. When Windows XP was deployed, some departments decided to stay with Windows 2000 for two reasons:

  1. keep uniformity in the department (all Windows 2000)
  2. had applications that didn't run in Windows XP

While Microsoft still offers security patches for Windows 2000, it is only a matter of time before businesses will have to start paying for this service. Nothing new will be developed for Windows 2000. The next operating system, called Vista, will be available sometime in 2007.

A recent scan of our computing in academic support departments it was noted that there are Windows 2000 computers in Distance and Continuing Ed, Finance, ODAA, Watcard, Athletics, Audio Visual, CECS, Health Services, Office for Persons with Disabilities, Office of Research, Registrar's Office, and others.

IST would like departments to phase out Windows 2000 by the end of 2006. Some of this will happen through the Dell Desktop rollover, for those that are eligible, but not all.

We will need your help to make this happen.
