will disappear in the future. Some printers use CAP, and these printers are
used by Mac and PC users. Notification will be given to departments beforehand.
- Mac Users - UoW Updater service is being terminated in May 2001. Paul Henderson
mentioned that anyone using this service will receive notification and instructions
on their Mac's screen. Please print and read the instructions.
- Support Web
Page - Pat mentioned that in addition to IST's
web page there is a newly-created web page for the computer support reps
in the academic-support departments. Please bookmark, check and use this web
page. Comments and suggestions can be sent to Pat. Pat also asked for suggestions
as to what name to use "academic-support departments" or "non-academic
departments" or "admin departments" or ??? Feedback welcomed.
- Virus Protection -
Marj talked about the importance of virus protection. She demonstrated updating
Norton-AntiVirus's definition file using LiveUpdate. Have the options set
to have LiveUpdate done on a weekly basis and also the drive scanned weekly.
Also mentioned that everyone should update to version 7 of Norton. Many departments
are still at version 5 and this version will eventually lose support from
the vendor. No charge for update. An email will be sent later concerning upgrading
procedures. Reminder, to never open any email attachments with filenames that
end in .vbs or .exe files. Marj also mentioned that those who are using Outlook
should make sure they install all security patches.
- Software - Pat discussed Eudora: PC users should replace the eudora.bat
file on the c:drive with the newly modified version on the y:drive as per
email sent earlier. If changing someone's mailer from non-Eudora package (PC
Pine, Pine, Netscape, Outlook) or an older Eudora version, make sure you mention
that ads will appear by default (sponsored mode). If no ads wanted, then change
to "light mode" or purchase a copy "paid mode". If anyone
is using 4.x of Eudora, best to install 5.x as per April 5 email when people
started receiving message of "illegal operation...".Eudora 5.1 is
now available. IST is testing and you will be notified when it's on the network
drive.Best to wait until the testing is done before you update.
- Software Cont'd - Marj mentioned it was best not to update to Netscape 6.x
because of problems. Stay with 4.7x. If wanting to update from Office 97 ...
Office XP is on the horizon. Also a new version of Visio and Adobe Acrobat.
Pat asked if anyone was using the PH program on the PC's desktop (labelled
UWdir). Plant Operations, Safety and Health Services uses it.
- Windows 2000 Update
- Bob gave a summary. Mentioned IST still testing, and once IST is more confident
then communication regarding deployment in other areas will happen. If purchasing
new hardware, please check Recommended
PC Hardware site.
- Wrap-Up - Pat thanked participants and attendees for coming. Have a safe
summer. Another meeting will probably take place in August. To be announced
later.
