Academic Support Computer Rep General MeetingThursday February 11, 201010 am - 12 noon, NH 3001Minutes
Agenda
Minutes:It is important to keep the computing support rep contact sheet up-to-date. A request from someone in an academic support department not listed in the contact sheet will not be acted upon. Encrypting Laptops (Jason Testart) Everyone should be familiar with Policy 8 - Information Security. Information in the custody or control of the university is either Confidential or Public. Information is Confidential where there is an expectation that such information will not be disclosed to anyone except those persons requiring the information for a legitimate purpose. Restricted information is the subset of Confidential information where the protection of such information is required by law or regulation, or the university is required to provide notice to an individual or some authority if information is inappropriately accessed. Highly Restricted information is the subset of Restricted information that presents a higher risk to the university if compromised. The university collects Highly Restricted information only when absolutely necessary to conduct its business. There is an initiative underway to encrypt laptops and memory sticks. More details will be provided later. Web Content Management System (Eva Grabinski) Eva described the Drupal pilot - see slides. Last Day for Admmail - March 31, 2010 (Phil Knipe) We are in the final phase of the migration to Exchange. Anyone still using an admmail account needs to make sure they have been migrated to Exchange by Wednesday March 31st. Monitoring the Health of Your Workstations Using Symmantec EndPoint Protection Console (Tim Farrell) Tim demonstrated how you can use Symmantec EndPoint Protection Console to check on the health of the workstations in your area. Tim offered to do more in-depth course for those interested. The Symmantec EndPoint Protection webpage is here. Tim's handy webpage is here. Lynda.com Web Based Training (Bob Hicks) Web based training compliments our in-class training. Web based training provides just-in-time training, about many topics that IST doesn't provide as part of their normal training program. IST has purchased 10 accounts, and UW Staff Training and Devlopment has purchased 5 Lynda.com accounts. All 15 accounts are administered through the CHIP. There are over 700 courses offered through Lynda.com. The accounts are available for one week during times when there is a waiting list, and two weeks during times when there is no waiting list. Early feedback has been very positive. Click here for more information. A project team is investigating whether or not Exchange Calendar can replace Bookit. The team has good representation from across campus. Exchange Calendar is very different from Bookit, so training will be required for most clients. If it is decided to use Exchange Calendar, it is expected that the migration and training will occur between November 2010 and January 2011. Windows 7 and Desktop Rollover Program (Bob Hicks) The desktop rollover program will resume after the IOI 2010 competition (a programming contest for 400 high school students from all over the world), which takes place in August 2010. The 400 workstations used in IOI 2010 will be redeployed as desktop rollover workstations, and will be imaged with Windows 7. A summary of Windows 7 issues can be found here. Training in Windows 7 will be offered as a SEW course from time to time. Please let Bob Hicks know if your department has any GX620 workstations being used by FTE staff. These will be the first workstations replaced in the Fall. Heather Wey has taken over from Bob Hicks as the SEW course coordinator. Heather talked about the new training lab in MC 2060 and also the SEW courses being offered in March and April. There is a new SEW course electronic registration system that will keep track of the courses that you take. Slides are here. Threee is a project underway to investigate the use of SharePoint 2010. SharePoint 2010 is new version of SharePoint MOSS. There are features in SharePoint 2010/MOSS that are not availble in SharePoint Services, and the project team needs to determine if these features are worth the extra cost and the extra work inolved. IST usually skips a version of Office. We deployed and provided training for Office 2007, so if we stay on our plan we would not deploy and provide training for Office 2010. Usually there haven't been enough "must have" features in each new Office version, and also there is cost to upgrade. We will look at Office 2010, and investigate how it integrates with new products like SharePoint 2010.
