Before you begin with Mac Mail:
- Update your email field in WatIAM (http://watiam.uwaterloo.ca) to show the full Exchange server email address (youruserid@connect.uwaterloo.ca).
- If you were on a previous email server, set your old email address to forward all messages to the new Exchange server email address.
- For admmail use http://mywaterloo.ca to set up a forward to your new ’connect’ account, or use Terminal to create a .forward file.
- For mailservices use SquirrelMail http://mailservices.uwaterloo.ca/webmail
Note: If one is using the Mail client that comes with 10.5.x there is a reasonably exchange friendly ‘setup wizard’ when you create a new account. System 10.6 (out this Fall) promises full exchange compatibility, including calendar and connecting to the Global Access List. Needless to say, do a “Software update” on the Mac before anything else to ensure the latest versions of software are being used.
The following are instructions for setting up the version of Mac Mail that comes with OS X 10.5. The version that comes with OS X 10.4 is very similar – the only differences are that some of the info is entered in different screens in the ‘setup wizard’.

LDAP for MacMail
This is not part of using the connect server, but it is recommended that you set your mac up to use UWLDAP, which is a directory of all users on campus
- Open AddressBook application (not mail) and choose Preferences from the Addressbook Menu
- Click on the LDAP button or tab
- Click on the “+” button and enter the following:
- Name: ‘UW Addressbook’ or ‘WatIAM’ or some other name that you will recognize
- Server: uwldap.uwaterloo.ca
- Port: leave at default of 389
- Use SSL: leave unchecked
- Search base: dc=uwaterloo,dc=ca
- Authentication: leave as none
- Click on the Save button.

- Under the General tab/button, check Synchronize with Exchange.
- You will get the window shown below opening; click on the “Always Allow” button.
- Click on the Exchange button when prompted. Next, the following window will open; optionally check Synchronize every hour and then click OK.

- Leave the address book open for now. Next time you open MacMail and start a new message you may get a message saying “Mail wants to use your confidential information stored in ‘uwldap.uwaterloo.ca’ in your keychain”; click on the Always Allow button.
With UWLAP set up, Mac Mail will autocomplete addresses for you for anyone on campus, as you start to type their full name, last name, or email address.
