Configure & Secure Email - Macintosh OS X 10.5 Mail
NOTE: Click here for MacMail instructions if you are on UW's Exchange server (connect).
- Open Mail. You can find Mail in the Dock next to the Finder icon, or in /Applications.

- If this is the first time you have used email, the following dialog will appear.

- Enter your name, email address and email password. Note: If you have provided email information when you setup your mac initially, that information will be automatically filled in here.
- Then click on
- Next the server information dialog will appear.
- Choose IMAP as the account type
- Enter an account description such as "UW mail", if desired.
- Fill in your email server's address, and make sure your user name is correct.
- Then click on

- The Incoming Mail Security dialog will appear.
- Check off "Use Secure Sockets Layer"
- Make sure Authentication is Password
- Then click on

- The Outgoing Server dialog will appear.
- Provide a description for the mail server, such as "UW mail"
- Make sure the outgoing server address is correct
- Check off Use Authentication, enter your email userid and password
- Then click on

- The Account Summary Window will appear:
- Do not check off the "Take account online", as you still need to change the secure port numbers.
- Click on
button to create your account.
- Now choose the email preferences as shown below:

Under the Account Information section, choose Edit Server List for the Outgoing Mail Server as shown below:

The following dialog should appear:
- Change the Server port from 25 to 465 as shown above
- Click on the
button to close this dialog.
- Then choose the advanced section as shown below:
- Set your IMAP Path Prefix to "mail" as shown above.
- Change the Port number from 143 to 993 as shown above.
- Close this dialog window and save the changes.
- You should now be able to read and send email, give it a try.
