Mobile Devices

Mobile devices such as Blackbery, iPhone, Android and others change very quickly. Android devices can have different experiences depending on the particular implementation. As such we provide documentation on a best efforts basis and encourage you to read the vendor's documentation for the particulars of your specific device and software versions.

Known Android Issue

There is a known issue with Android devices using ActiveSync connections to Exchange. The issue is with OS version 2.2 on the device.

The work-around is to run a different version of the Android OS (it is unclear if the issue is fixed with versions 2.3 or later) or install a third-party ActiveSync application on the device. Although IST does not provide support for it, some users have reported that "TouchDown" by NitroDesk improves the stability and functionality of the ActiveSync software on devices running the Android OS.

Back Up First

Before setting up a new account, you should back up your device and be sure that you know how to restore it. Setting up an Exchange account makes many changes, and in some cases these changes are irreversible (i.e. they require wiping the device and starting over).

Exchange may Take Over

On many devices, setting up an Exchange account effectively takes over your Inbox, Calendar, and Contacts folders. The precise effect will vary depending on the device. In many cases, data from your device is moved into your Exchange account. For example, you may have personal appointments on your device that you would rather not have in detail in your shared calendar. You will need to check your Exchange account to see what has been added from your device.

Again, you will want a backup of your device in case of undesired side effects.

Blackberry

IST officially supports Blackberry devices. Please see our Blackberry and Exchange Calendar page for information on how to set up your Blackberry with the Exchange server.

More detailed setup instructions for the iPhone 4 (as of November 2010) are available and also explain how to choose a separate local calendar on your device.
