The campus direction for student email is to provision a single system,
mailservices, to provide email service for all undergraduate
students. Students will be expected to use this UW-provided email
address for official UW correspondence.

Further Definition of Plan for Student Email
The overall direction has some implications for existing systems and processes. In detail, changes should be discussed and further defined in the following areas:- WatIAM, the campus identity and access management system, should contain an email address for all students
- All students will be provided with a UW email account on mailservices when they commit to attend UW, typically by accepting an offer of admission
- Students will be provided with some choice of email address, encouraged to choose firstname.surname (if unique), such email address being associated with, but different than the system assigned WatIAMaccountId
- WatIAM should direct student email to mailservices, although students will be permitted to forward their email to another location
- Students will be expected to conduct official school business email communication using their UW-provided email address
- Faculty and administration will be expected to conduct official school business email communication with students by sending to their UW-provided email address
- Consider the changes necessary in mailservices hardware to provide a robust system to accommodate all students
- Consider the support model (role of IST, role of Faculty computing offices) and whether changes may be necessary in mailservices software to facilitate that support model.
- Schedule the migration of existing student email accounts to mailservices
- Consider the options for graduate students - should graduate students be included on mailservices?
How to Accomplish Plan for Student Email
Following agreement on plans for changes, then changes to UW processes and systems need to be implemented to accomplish plans. Some examples include:- WatIAM changes will likely be necessary, such as:
- No longer allow students to change their email address to direct email off campus within WatIAM.
- Develop a method to permit some choice in email address.
- Provision an email account to mailservices at time of acceptance of offer of admission.
- Create campus communication to students, faculty and staff regarding expectations, best practices and processes regarding student email.
In order to accomplish the campus direction for student email, CTSC requires commitment of staff time to discuss specifics, reach consensus and implement agreed changes.
