What is Maple?

Maple is a tool for symbolic and numerical computation (originally developed at UW). Many people use Maple to derive complex expressions and mathematical models from first principles. Maple and Matlab are in many ways complementary products (Maple dealing with symbolic computation and Matlab dealing with numerical computation). Each has add-on toolkits that provide seemless communication with the other. Maple may also be used as a self-contained environment for deriving, solving and documenting mathematical expressions.
