Creating and Administering Web Surveys

Who may develop a survey?

The Sensus Web survey development software is available to any member of the University of Waterloo who has a need for deploying a non course related online survey. Surveys may be opened to the general public or restricted to a list of respondents. Once surveys have been deployed results may be exported to a network connected computer.

Course related surveys are handled within the Angel Course Environment (UW-ACE). Queries regarding UW-ACE may be sent by e-mail.

How do I get started?

Request a survey developer account by connecting to Request For UW Web Survey Access.

After your request has been processed, you will receive email notifying you of the enablement and a URL where you may download the requisite software. Study the Installation document and accompanying design documents.

Survey Design

Questions about survey methods and design can be directed to the Survey Research Centre.

Research Ethics

Many surveys for campus use require approval by the UW Office of Research Ethics. Questions about Research Ethics can be directed to the Office Of Research Ethics. Establish a profile using their online application.

How do I create and deploy web surveys?

The download package contains a Microsoft Word document and three PDF files on how to create and deploy surveys. All development occurs on the local computer. Preliminary testing also happens on the local computer. When you are ready to begin testing on the Web server, read the survey deployment instructions and authenticate on the server using your UW Directory credentials.

How do I allow access to my web surveys?

Web surveys may be open to all respondents. If you are interested in restricting a survey to a list of respondents, you may accomplish this by preparing a list of potential respondents on your local computer and uploading to the server. Instructions for this process are included in the software package.
