Information Systems and Technology provides support for instructional computing in a variety of ways, frequently in co-operation with other departments on campus.
IST manages and supports UW-ACE, UW’s course management system, which is based on the Angel system.
Nexus is the primary student computing environment on campus. Nexus is supported by Engineering Computing, with assistance from the Faculties. Information about Nexus, including how to obtain a userid and what software is available can be found on the Nexus site or on your Faculty's computing support pages.
Many classrooms on campus have data projectors, or data projectors and podium computers installed. These classrooms are maintained by the Instructional Technologies and Multimedia Services group and the podium computers are Nexus workstations.
Some of the software used in UW courses is available for purchase by students, for use on their own computers. This software includes Mathcad, Maple, SAS and SPSS.
Many of the skills development courses presented by IST involve instruction on the use of software that may be used by course instructors. These courses include sessions on UW-ACE and PowerPoint, among other topics. Some of these courses can be used as credit toward the Certificate in University Teaching offered by the Centre for Teaching Excellence.
IST also provides a multiple choice exam marking service, Optical Mark Recognition Scanner.
