Supported Macintosh OS

IST supports Mac workstations running Mac OS X 10.6 and 10.5

Mac Servers

Information Systems and Technology does not support Mac Servers.

Recommended Hardware Purchases

Any new Macintosh you can purchase today is more than adequate as far as power is concerned.

Memory: 2 GB is the minimum these days, and 4 GB recommended. If you are planning on running a Windows virtual environment, 4 GB should be considered minimum.

Software Available

There is a great variety of software available for the Macintosh. Certain packages are supported or recommended.

Security Information (Computer and Network)

Information Systems and Technology maintains information on computer and network security for various computing platforms.

Virus Protection

Although viruses are not currently as big a problem on Macs as they are on PCs, Mac users should ensure that their virus protection is up to date. For University owned Macs, a copy of Symantec Anti-Virus (Norton) can be obtained from the CHIP in MC1052. For home Macs, the Home & Security CD contains a licensed copy of Symantec Anti-Virus (Norton).

Backup & Archiving Services

Macintoshes connected to the campus network can be backed up for an annual fee.

Hardware Repairs

IST hardware technicians are Apple certified and can carry out repairs to all your Macintosh hardware. Hardware repairs should be brought to the CHIP, MC1052.

Every month, IST offers a series of courses. Many of these apply to software running on Macs.
