Projects

IST staff are working on IST and UW/enterprise projects. The following is an alphabetical listing of those projects.

Project Title Project Leader Description
Active Directory Consolidation project Martin Timmerman The objective of this project is to merge the Nexus and ADS domains, and provide the services in that single domain architecture to enable the phasing out of other applicable active directory domains on campus. See Project Details and Project Charter.
IST Machine Room Firewall and Network Intrusion Detection Project Leaders Jason Testart
Mike Patterson

We are deploying new firewall technology for the IST machine room that allows us to segment different systems based on level of risk/exposure.  We also plan to introduce intrusion detection for the machine room itself, so that we can better detect and respond to security events involving institutional information systems.

Web Application Vulnerability Scanning Jason Testart
Terry Labach

We've identified that security problems in locally written web forms and applications present a serious risk to UW information.  We have acquired web application vulnerability scanning software with the intention of incorporating its use into the development life cycle of web applications.

Security Information and Event Management Jason Testart

This project is a long term project to improve our ability to detect and respond to security incidents by consolidating logs from systems and network/security devices into one place, with the use of software to analyze the data in real-time, correlate events, and report.

Recently Completed Projects

Waterloo CMS Project Eva Grabinski The Waterloo CMS Project will implement Drupal as the centrally supported website maintenance tool at UW. Drupal will replace the current centrally supported website maintenance tools, Adobe Dreamweaver and Contribute. Project Charter
LMS Selection Project Andrea Chappell Just as the OLE Review Project was ending, news broke that ANGEL, the software used for our online course environment, UW-ACE, had been bought by Blackboard. This means moving from ANGEL, either in a migration to Blackboard, or to another LMS. Once again the sponsor is UCIST, to whom we will recommend the next LMS system for UW. See more at the LMS Selection Project.
Identity Management Dave Kibble

The proposed goal of the overall  project will be to provide a single cohesive model for the management of identifiers on campus, as well as the technical architecture required to support that model. The goal is not to complete every service that may have been requested by various departments or units. Rather, it is to allow those efforts to tap into central infrastructure and use any best practices developed for Identity Management on campus. See details.

Information Security Policies, Standards & Awareness Jason Testart

Develop a comprehensive set of policies, procedures, standards and guidelines relating to information security for the UW community.  Once these have been established, operationalize through the promotion of standard operating procedures and the delivery of security awareness training.  See http://ist.uwaterloo.ca/security/policy/

VPN Services Jason Testart
Trevor Grove

UW mitigates Internet threats through the use of network-based access controls implemented in a variety of ways. While these network access controls reduce the risks of successful compromise, they also create some impediments to the UW community using UW computing services over the Internet.  A remote access VPN service enables telecommuting by virtually extending the campus network to remote users, allow them to by-pass some of the network security controls.  More information.

Implement Exchange Calendar Will Lewis/Bob Hicks The objective of this project is to replace Bookit with Exchange Calendar. Project Charter.
Investigation into Google Apps and Micrsoft's Live@edu Jennifer Keir The objective of this project is to investigate Google Apps and Microsoft's Live@edu solutions. There has been no decision to proceed with implementation; this investigation is simply a necessary precursor to making an informed decision to proceed or otherwise. Project Charter.
Investigate Office 2010 Deployment Bob Hicks The objective of this project is to investigate whether IST should deploy Office 2010. If the recommendation of the project is to deploy Office 2010, IST would seek approval from UCIST and CTSC and proceed with the implementation of the recommendations. Project Charter.
Laptop Encryption Jason Testart
Bob Hicks

Description: Sensitive data on laptops present a serious risk to the university if these laptops get lost or stolen.  The use of laptop encryption mitigates this risk.  We will be rolling-out a commercial solution that features central management, key recovery, and support for both Windows and Mac OS X.

Next Generation (Student) Email Project Bruce Campbell, Martin Timmerman This new project group will work on the evolution of the student email services. Staff and faculty email may also be considered. The intent is to evolve to a next generation, improved email service in a 12 month period. The group would initially focus on what the service looks like, what technologies are possible, and general cost boundaries. The leaders will report to UCIST at various checkpoints for discussion, including for selection of the solution. They would then begin the work to implement the next solution. See details.

IST Machine Room Uninterrupted Power Project

Manfred Grisebach

The objective of this project is to review and identify all of the advantages and disadvantages of one large central UPS solution over what we have now and to find and recommend a vendor and a model, of UPS devices that, at the very least, meets or exceeds our current UPS requirements. Options as to where the UPS could be located should be presented. The project team also needs to determine how much of the current machine and communications room equipment can be served by such a solution and make it part of the recommendation. See details.

Investigation in SharePoint 2010 Stephen Markan

SharePoint Services was first introduced to the campus in September 2005. It has become a very popular collaboration tool by faculties/departments across the campus. Some groups are starting to push the limits of SharePoint Services, and some are asking for features only available in SharePoint MOSS (e.g workflows). SharePoint 2010, formerly known as SharePoint MOSS, will be available early in the year 2010. We need to learn more about SharePoint 2010, and make a decision if this is the direction we should go. Project Charter.

Exchange Calendar - a possible replacement for Bookit Bob Hicks

The objective of this project is to investigate the calendaring and meeting scheduling functionality of Exchange, to identify gaps in the functionality of Exchange in comparision with Oracle Calendar and to consider and make recommendations for the possible replacement for Oracle Calendar with Exchange. If the recommendation of the project is to replace Oracle Calendar with Exchange, it would seek approval from UCIST and proceed with the implementation of the recommendations. See more in Project Charter.

Exchange Migration to Exchange Server

Phil Knipe
Bob Hicks
The purpose of this project is to provide guidance, procedures, documentation, tools and direct assistance to migrate staff groups, and faculty groups, from their existing email servers to Exchange. Project Charter.
UW Microsoft Exchange Server Project Trevor Bain The primary objective of this project is to determine if Microsoft Exchange has the potential to become the primary email collaboration tool for faculty and staff at University of Waterloo, replacing the current sendmail and IMAP environment after a suitable transition period. See Project Website.
EndPoint Security Project Stephen Markan

The Endpoint Security Evaluation Project was charged with reviewing the desktop anti-virus and other security available for Windows and MacOS desktop devices. UW has had a long and positive relationship with Symantec. The current license with Symantec expires in August 2009. As the new product from Symantec is a replacement of the existing licensed offering, an assessment of competing products is appropriate. Project Charter. Final Report.

Online Learning Environment Review Andrea Chappell Review needs for our online course environment by gathering input from faculty members, students, and staff who support our UW-ACE system. Review the changes since implementing ANGEL, such as the "Web 2.0" tools, and the prevalence of mobile devices. Report to sponsor, UCIST, on directions we might take starting in the 2010 horizon. See more at Project Charter, and OLE Review Project Web Page and Final Report.
Enhancing Support for UW Users of RIM Blackberry Trevor Bain The objectives of this project are potentially two-fold, with a review by IST Management regarding continuation after the first objective is realized. The first objective is to recommend a set of services that UW should provide to enhance the use of the RIM BlackBerry on campus. Such a recommendation would come from examination of both the services required and the available options to provide those services. If IST Management agrees on the recommendation above, then the second objective of this project will be to implement the recommended service(s) for a pilot group of users, monitor the results and develop recommendations for ongoing support. While there are a variety of wireless communication devices in use on campus, this project will focus on the specific needs of BlackBerry users. With respect to potential enhanced calendar services, only those services that interoperate with Bookit, the UW Oracle Calendar Service are to be considered. With respect to potential enhanced email and voicemail services, consideration may include the introduction of new servers. See details.
Implementing Office 2007

Bob Hicks

The "Preparing for Vista and Office 2007" project (below) assessed Office 2007 and recommended it's implementation during the spring and summer of 2007. This project provides the details of this implementation in the academic-support areas of the University.See details (including problem list).

Implementing Vista Bob Hicks The deployment of Vista. The deployment involves configuring, training, testing, deploying. See Project Charter. Vista Migration Project
Preparing for Vista and Office 2007 Trevor Bain, Bob Hicks
