GlobalSign Signed X509.3 Certificates

The UW/IST Certificate Authority has the authority to issue certificates signed by GlobalSign and Thawte for hosts within the uwaterloo.ca domain. These are recognized by most web browsers and other applications. Since late 2009, we have only been issuing new GlobalSign certificates.

GlobalSign certificates are appropriate for production servers that require secured communications. For test and development platforms, or systems used internally, an IST-CA issued certificate is often adequate.

If you require a GlobalSign SSL certificate for a system at the University of Waterloo, you can submit your request using our self-service portal, following the instructions at Self-service GlobalSign SSL certificates. Both new and renewal certificates can be requested this way.

If you require more assistance, you can also submit requests either using the RT system web form (preferred) or by sending the request by email.

The list of current active certificates signed by Thawte (ordered by date of issue and including the CA certificates) is as follows:

  1. CN=Thawte Server CA/emailAddress=server-certs@thawte.com
    (Aug 1 00:00:00 1996 GMT - Dec 31 23:59:59 2020 GMT)
  2. CN=Thawte Premium Server CA/emailAddress=premium-server@thawte.com
    (Aug 1 00:00:00 1996 GMT - Dec 31 23:59:59 2020 GMT)
