Laptops are only the tip of a very large iceberg. All portable media
are problems as all can be used to hold sensitive information. See
SANS/Tip. You should consider how
sensitive information is leaving your site.
- Remember floppies? Now we have thumb drives, writable and
rewrite-able CD/DVD's.
- Music players, like iPods by Apple and others, are large portable
USB file stores.
- Camera flash memory cards (the new film) are tiny and many
computers come with card adapters supporting several different
formats.
- PDAs: Cell phones, Palm Pilots and Blackberries are increasingly
complex devices -- awfully close to a laptop.
- And don't forget the traditional medium -- paper.
Does anyone encrypt these media? Does anyone put passwords on their
mobile phone, music player, PDA?
