There are other times where a "login" is required ....
- Never walk away from your laptop without locking the console -- a
lot can be revealed and/or discovered in a very few moments. See
SANS Security Tip.
Shortcut: press "Windows Key" and "L" to lock your screen.
- By the same token -- use a password protected screen saver (in
case you forget to lock the console).
How? Right
click on the desktop to "Properties", select the "Screen
Saver" tab, and check "On resume, password protect".
- By the same token -- use password protected resume from standby
(ie. from Power Saver).
How? On the "Screen Saver" tab select "Power"
management, select the "Advanced" tab,and check "Prompt for
password when computer resumes from standby".
- A firewall with no exceptions will restrict logins to the
console. If you must offer file/print services then others can
login over the network -- others including "Administrator",
"Guest" and more.
How? from "Control Panel", then "Performance and Maintenance",
then "Administrative Tools" to find "Local Security Policy" and
limit who may login over the network --- or disable login on the
accounts.
