Who am I at UW?
Andrea Chappell, Information Systems and Technology
I started work at the University of Waterloo in November 1988 with the Department
of Computing Services (later merged, reorganized, and renamed Information Systems
and Technology). Before coming to UW I worked for two years at Canadian Pacific
in Toronto in the Computers and Communications division generating network mappings
of terminals and computers using the IBM virtual terminal generation software,
and looking at the topology of the CP network for connectivity redundancy optimization.
At UW I have held four different jobs:
- Nov. 1988 - July 1990
In my first at UW job I worked as a Computing Consultant, teaching
courses on how to use computers and applications, writing documentation, and
working in the Engineering and DCS consulting offices answering questions
on general computing matters, and specializing in C programming, Unix usage,
and Latex document formatting.
- July 1990 - August 1991
Leave of absence to live in Belgium for a year!
- August 1991 - 1994
After a reorganization of DCS I moved to the newly formed Faculty Projects
Group, working with the fun folks in Applied Health Sciences. We worked
on PC networking, using DEC's Pathworks and University of Waterloo's Watstar, and moving the DEC Ultrix Faculty server into place.
- 1994 - 1997
Next I worked in the Unix Support Group, supporting Silicon
Graphics, Digital Unix and terminal servers.
- May 1997 - December 2003
After the merge of DCS, Data Processing and Telephone Services into one department,
Information Systems and Technology (IST), I moved to the Electronic Workplace
Group, into a new position called Senior Technologist, Teaching and
Learning Technologies. I was seconded full time to the Centre for
Learning and Teaching Through Technology (LT3)
as a technology planner, with the mandate for what was eventually called Learning
Spaces.
- January 2004 - May 2006
My secondment changed from LT3 back to IST as Special Projects Consultant to the Associate Provost - IST to focus on campus-wide projects.
- May 2006 - present
I now am Director of Instructional Technologies and Multimedia Services, a new group in IST that welcomes into its ranks the former Audio Visual department.
