Mr. Vere Foster was an Irish philanthropist who helped many young women emigrate to Canada and the United States. In 1852 he established the Irish Female Emigration Fund. The first party sailed with the assistance of the Fund in 1852.
Mr. Foster sailed from Liverpool with 70 female emigrants for Canada in May, 1856. One young lady, Elisa Adams [alias Doolan] sailed to Quebec in June, 1856, on the Arran. A party of 75 sailed on the Lady Franklin on May 15, 1856. Another party of 40 sailed to New York, on June 5, onboard the Calhoun. This was followed a few days later, on June 9, with five women sailing on the Orient, also to New York. We are indebted to the Newry Examiner and Louth Advertiser of July 23, 1856, for the following list of names.
