Minutes for Admin Computer Support Meeting Held January 11, 2006

New Desktop Image Being Worked On

The applications on the current IST desktop image haven't changed much since we deployed Windows 2000. The applications have been updated, and some are being patched. It is time to revisit the image, and that is currently being done.

The image currently contains applications like Shockwave, Flash, and Eudora. Applications like Shockwave are updated when a new image is created, but for those that haven't received a new image for while, their version of Shockwave is quite old.

If some of the applications are removed from the current image, IST needs to provide tools that allow computing support reps to add applications as needed, either by department (organization unit) or by individual user.

The following applications are on the current image, and are on the list of those to be removed:

Please call Bob Hicks if you have concerns about this as this topic is still being discussed. Again, tools will be provided for you to add these apps if you need them. You need to be aware that if you add them, then it is your responsility to keep them updated and patched. At the meeting, the use of Shockwave was minimal, but most said Eudora was needed.

Speaking of Eudora, we discussed it's long term future at UW. Eudora will be fazed out eventually. IST is recommending that people use Outlook. We also realize this is going to take a long time to accomplish.
