Running UD/WCG only when screen saver is active
For Install 1 and Install 3: If the grid software is left unmodified, it will always run and by default utilize 60% of the available idle CPU cycles. If this is a problem, it can be configured to run only when the WCG screen saver is active:
- Double-click on the grid icon in the system tray
- Click on the checkmark icon to bring up the preferences.
- Check the Run only as screen saver option
- Click Apply in that window region to save this change.
Issues
This option applies no matter what mode (application or service) that WCG is run in. If you set this option, then convert the WCG application to run as a Windows service, WCG will only run when the WCG screen saver activates.
If WCG gets installed as a service, and not in screen saver-only mode, then the user will see an error when Windows attempts to launch the WCG screen saver and only the generic WCG text & logo will show. This is because UD.EXE is already running and active when the screen saver attempts to launch it again. This is even the case when the Allow service to interact with desktop option is set for the WCG service. It is recommended to change the user screen saver to something other than WCG to avoid this problem.
